Job Description – Full Time Bicycle Mechanic, March 2026

Job Description:
The Recyclery Collective is hiring an experienced bicycle mechanic to fix used bicycles to sell, and to help manage the physical shop. This is a Full- time position. Our Full-Time Staff Mechanic would act as a service manager for our repair shop and be responsible for collaborating with our Part-Time Mechanic and Intern staff to build our donation bikes into refurbished bikes that we sell in our shop. The staff member will work at our shop in Rogers Park, 40 hrs per week with a semi-flexible schedule. The position starts at $23.15 per hour.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Bicycle Repair:
- Maintaining a healthy stock of sale bikes by refurbishing ~5 bikes per week, with an average sale price of $350 per bike
- Sorting donated bicycles into appropriate Recyclery programs
- Maintaining records of bikes fixed and repairs made
- Checking the safety of and providing feedback on bikes fixed by youth interns and other staff
- Helping to transport bike donations
- Communicating broader shop responsibilities (weekly, monthly) to part-time and intern mechanic staff as well as providing guidance to them as needed.
Shop Management:
- Maintaining cleanliness and organization of our shop and storage spaces
- Keeping accurate records of inventory, and ensuring adequate stock
- Sorting part and accessory donations
- Collaborating and communicating with staff, volunteers and the Collective to ensure all our programs thrive
- Delegating shop upkeep tasks to volunteers where necessary and appropriate
Necessary Qualifications
- Minimum of 2 years mechanical experience in a bike shop. Should be comfortable doing full tune ups and overhauls, bearing service, and detailed diagnostics/service writing for bikes that are of various ages and conditions.
- Familiarity with bicycle component manufacturers, component compatibility, and period-appropriate repairs
- Experience working on a wide range of bikes dating back to the 1970s
- Ability to safely operate power tools, including bench grinder, angle grinder, blowtorch, air compressor, and others.
- Interest in furthering the mission of The Recyclery, embodying our values, and upholding our safe space guidelines
- Commitment to cultivating and maintaining positive and productive relationships with our neighbors, clients, volunteers, and the greater Rogers Park community
- Strong work ethic, ability to self-motivate, and a willingness to ask for assistance
Additional Skills Preferred
- Experience as a service manager in a bike shop preferred
- Valid driver’s license and a driving record with no serious past offenses.
- Experience with retail POS systems (The Recyclery uses Lightspeed), Google Business Suite, and standard office equipment
- Bilingual is a plus (Spanish, French, Arabic, Swahili, Pashto)
Working with the Collective:
The Recyclery is run by a Collective which meets twice a month to decide issues impacting the direction of the organization and operates using a consensus process. Staff are strongly encouraged to join collective meetings and are paid for time spent at meetings.
